Hagley Park - Parking Restrictions

Hagley Park – Parking Restrictions

Ahead of the Metro Rugby season kicking off this weekend, it is timely to let you know about two matters affecting Hagley Park so you can update your club members.

Hagley Park no stopping areas:

There is an ongoing issue with vehicles illegally parking around Hagley Park. Work has started on installing barriers along the berm adjacent to the Bob Deans Fields in North Hagley Park to prevent people from parking there. These barriers enable permanent post and rail fencing to be installed from the week starting 4 April 2016 – this work is needed to protect the health of our treasured, historic trees and is expected to take two weeks to complete.

However, there are other berms around the park without barriers and we are asking people not to park in these areas. We are beginning by installing fencing on the berm adjacent to the Bob Deans Fields and other areas will progressively follow. This work is consistent with the Hagley Park Management Plan.

Illegal parking behaviour creates a safety hazard as cars reverse into on-coming traffic. People could be fined up to $40, or have their vehicles towed.

Please find the attached flyer. Please distribute this to your club members.

Condition of city-wide winter sports fields:

Due to the dry 2015 winter and the hot, dry 2015/16 summer that followed, winter sports fields across the city are unusually dry and hard coming into the season. The Council's Parks Team has carried out its usual pre-season maintenance of the grounds. However, the unseasonably dry weather has meant grass cover is stressed and not as lush as we normally experience going into the winter sports code season. And not many of the fields are irrigated.

The Council will closely monitor the ground conditions as the season progresses and expect them to soften if, and when, the rain comes.
